[1809, ou] Strange issue on BBC media files

We have a strange BBC iplayer / BBC sounds issue when played in IE on Windows 10 and it only happens when there is no Default Gateway in the Network Connection. This problem has only just started to happen and does not effect Google Chrome.

 

When there is no Default Gateway set in the NIC, iplayer or sounds do not play any media yet other streaming services work. Test with the same sites in Chrome and it works fine.

 

Add anything to the default gateway (192.160.0.0) on a 172.16.24.0 network and iplayer works fine in IE even though we have no network configured to use 192.168.0.0 - it's really strange.

 

I would have thought it was an issue on the smoothwall but it would seem this isnt the case.

 

Some if you may be wondering why we dont have a default gateway set, we have never had a default gateway set on domain connected machines meaning EVERYTHING goes through the proxy. Only now has it started to impact IE.

 

It may be that we have to go back to basics with group policy to see if it's a group policy issue but was wondering if anyone has seen this behavour before?

 

A simple answer would be to use Chrome however this is one of those issues that id like to get to the bottom of.

Wg EVERYTHING goes through the proxy

 

That would be traffic on Port 80 and 443. Other traffic wouldn't go trough the proxy. So if I player is using another port and the DG isn't set that is why you may have a problem.

Ok, so why would chrome work? Would Chrome be using a different port to IE? Also i can put anything in the Default Gateway - could have have tried 172.0.0.0. This address is not known on our network.

Update on this, we have tested a LTSB 2016 (1607) machine and this works on iplayer with no default gateway set.

 

It would seem that the issue is with LTSC2019 - Great!!!!!!

I'm not sure how a Smoothwall functions, but can you set it up to where it has two NICs and acts as a router so you can just set the default gateway on your clients to point to it? Either that, or give the clients an actual gateway and maintain the ACL on your firewall to block web traffic from all sources with the exception of the Smoothwall box. Then you could open a hole for the BBC player's destination.

So, an update to this, this is an issue with WINDOWS 10 after 1803 so 1809 onwards. There is an issue here which relates to windows updates which looks like it's the same issue.

On 1809 we have tried inputting a static IP into the NIC settings (172.16.26.73) with our subnet, NO DEFAULT GATEWAY and DNS and iplayer worked fine. So it would seem that the Windows version is at fault here.

Another update to this, this doesn't just apply to 1809, it also applies to 1903.

 

My office machine runs education and it upgraded from 1803 to 1903.

 

As a test on 1903, i performed the following tests:

 

1. NIC with no Default Gateway but gets an address from the DHCP server, noted the DHCP configuration doesn't push a DG out. The machine has the proxy set.

- Result: BBC streaming services don't work

 

2. NIC to no Default Gateway but a Static IP, with Subnet and DNS. The machine still has the proxy set

- Result: BBC Streaming services work

 

3. NIC getting a DHCP address with either a "router" address set in DHCP or a manually added Default Gateway.

- Result: BBC Streaming services work

 

What i find weird is why would the BBC streaming services work if only the NIC had a static IP, Subnet Mask and DNS configured with the proxy set but no default gateway yet when we push out a DHCP address without a Default gateway it doesn't work - it doesn't make any sense!
