DHCP assigned by Vendor

We have a number of Nortel IP Phone that we want to bring into our network. However, we would like to use an seprate IP scope for all of these phones. Someone at Nortel has indicated that there is a way to hand out from a particular scope based on a Vendor code. We are using Windows Server 2003 and I am at a bit of a loss on how to accomplish this. Does anyne have any ideas for us?

I'm sure you know how to create a Scope, but I'm not sure how a vendor code comes into play? Thinking about it though, if the phones support DHCP (which sounds like they do), what's wrong with them getting an IP from your existing pool? I don't see what you would gain.

You can set classes on a computer using ipconfig /setclassid . Which you can work as you desired so I assume you can set something on the phones and set the DHCP server accordingly.

I looked at this stuff in 2000 days and dismissed it as useful for me: I thought you couldn't use the custom class ids to get IP addresses from a different scope, just a different set of options from the same scope everything else uses on the same subnet (different gateway, DNS, ..).

 

Someone might know better though.

This doesn't work properly on Windows DHCP. I'm using ISC DHCPD to do this fine though.
