Extending IP range HELP!!

Hi,

 

Can you have a look at this document we have been send about how are IP address will have to be changed as we are running out. We are rather lost on what it is on about to be honest. One thing is what does it mean by 172.16.140.0 /23? What does the /23 mean?

 

I don't know anything about this. What does the document mean and what would we have to do on the server after NTL have done their bit?

the /23 refers to how many bits are utilised in the subnet mask.

 

/24 is 255.255.255.0 (8bits.8bits.8bits.0bits)

/23 is 255.255.254.0 (8bits.8bits.7bits.0bits)

 

The extra bit borrowed from the subnet mask is used to increase the number of hosts the nework can have, in this case from 256 (254 actually because the first and last are unusable as hosts) to 512 (510)

So long as you have a good knowledge of your network setup and you plan carefully, an IP migration is a fairly straightforward task.

 

Took less than a day here (not including planning) when we moved the range over Easter.
