Koldov Posted June 24, 2019 Posted June 24, 2019 Microsoft's June 2019 updates have created a bug in the Event Viewer tool in all supported versions of Windows https://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-latest-patches-crash-event-viewer-but-microsoft-has-temporary-fix/ Anybody else getting this?
NetworkServices Posted July 5, 2019 Posted July 5, 2019 I experienced this for the first time this morning whilst remotely examining event logs on one of our workstations.
Koldov Posted July 10, 2019 Author Posted July 10, 2019 This worked for me... Read the whole article... YMMV... UAYOR... “The process cannot access the file ‘C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Event Viewer\Views\View_0.xml’ because it is used by another process”. is displayed in this context. The solution proposed by colleagues is therefore quite simple. Navigate to the following folder in Explorer: ‘C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Event Viewer\Views\ There you should find a file View_0.xml or with another consecutive number. This file must be deleted (requires administrator privileges). The MMC.exe will then recreate the View_x.xml at the next start if required and the display of the user-defined views should work again. https://borncity.com/win/2019/06/12/windows-10-updates-kb4503293-kb4503327-kills-event-viewer/
Arthur Posted July 10, 2019 Posted July 10, 2019 The Event Viewer bug has been fixed now. https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4501375/windows-10-update-kb4501375
Koldov Posted July 10, 2019 Author Posted July 10, 2019 Is that a Win 10 fix only KB number? Only it says for v1903, server 1903. My issue is on Server 2012R2...
Arthur Posted July 10, 2019 Posted July 10, 2019 Is that a Win 10 fix only KB number? It was. Sorry. My issue is on Server 2012 R2... The 20th June CU for 2012 R2 includes a fix for the following Event Viewer issue. Do you already have the 9th July CU installed? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4503283 Improvements and fixes Addresses an issue that may display the error, "MMC has detected an error in a snap-in and will unload it". when you try to expand, view, or create Custom Views in Event Viewer. Additionally, the application may stop responding or close. You may also receive the same error when using Filter Current Log in the Action menu with built-in views or logs. 1
Koldov Posted July 11, 2019 Author Posted July 11, 2019 (edited) Strange.... June 20, 2019—KB4503283 (Preview of Monthly Rollup) I don't see any 'Preview' updates on the server.... Not even in 'optional'... Would these be 'recommended' I wonder, as I don't have that ticked on the servers... Last CU's as follows: 2019-07 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows Server 2012 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB4507448) - Waiting to install (I mean see what else it breaks)... Edited: This includes KB4503283 - so I guess it will fix it... 2019-06 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows Server 2012 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB4503276) - Installation date: 22/06/2019 18:51 2019-05 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows Server 2012 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB4499151) - Installation date: 20/05/2019 20:25 2019-04 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows Server 2012 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB4493446) - Installation date: 11/04/2019 14:15 Edited July 11, 2019 by Koldov
