How are you managing updates for provisioned apps?

Provisioned apps like Photos, Calculator, etc. can't be updated from WSUS or SCCM DPs. How do you manage this in schools with limited bandwidth? Edited June 4, 2019 by JasonNVSD

We don't update the built-in apps. Most of our site is on 1709 and that WIM had the most of the built-in apps removed. Those that remained, such as calculator, photos, etc were not updated. Users do not have access to the Store. I'm currently testing 1903 and left the built-in apps in the WIM. I'll be using AppLocker to disable access to them and they will also not be updated with users still unable to access the store.

Assumingly when you move up versions (1803 -> 1809 -> 1903) etc - It'll replace the existing provisioned apps with the updated ones?

This is essentially what we have been doing, but now apps seem to be disabling themselves when they realize an update exists. Also, some teachers want to use the "Video" feature that was added to the new Photos.

In essence you can't manage the updates. You can use group policy to use WUDO in theroy content for updates is only downloaded once and shared with peers on the same subnet. This is fine if all your PCs are on all the time.

Well, the 5 options in the poll are forms of management. But you're correct, you can't deploy the updates per se.

 

There's another option in early beta called Delivery Optimization In-Network Cache (DOINC). Normally I wouldn't be an early adopter, but this is something I'd jump on.

I can't speak for 1903, but moving to 1809 didn't include the updates to photos to allow the video editor so I've now re-enabled app updates

I have a problem with the provisioned apps when user1 logins to a device they get the provisioned apps - the same user logsin to different device they may or may not get provisioned apps.

 

What could be causing this?
