You will no longer be able to log into deploy.apple.com or Apple's VPP Store, if you have ASM you will need to ensure you are using Apps and Books in ASM, not the link which takes you to VPP Store.

We're looking at Business Manager, not School Manager.

Appears to still allow App Store and user-created Apple IDs, rather than the school-centric method that ASM uses.

So you are a business yes and not a school....?

Nope.

To get Business Manager, you only need a DUNS number - which we have.

www.dnb.co.uk

It's the same for Business Manager users as well...

Apple School Manager does not force you to use Managed Apple ID's for end users, either none or personal ones still work to push content.

You still need a Managed Apple ID to log into ABM

Apple Business Manager can not support Apple Classroom.

I've no idea why as a school you are looking at this, a stupid idea altogther.

It’s been a long time since I upgraded but I’m pretty sure there was an upgrade link offered once logged into the deploy site. From there it was a pretty easy process involving re-verifying ownership (phone call from apple to our bursar in our case)
