Veeam for physical servers

Does anyone have experience with using Veeam to back up physical servers?

 

I believe they have an agent these days to do so, but does it link in to the normal Veeam console so we can create jobs in there as with all our VMs?

 

At the moment we have 6 physical servers with Iperius and individual tape backups but it would be good just to stick them all through Veeam so they back up to our Veeam SAN then eventually to the central tape library

We use Veeam Agent for our physical server backup. Whilst you can see the jobs in the Veeam console, you can’t create and edit jobs without additional licensing. If you are backing up to your tape library via a backup copy job then you will need to create a separate job for the physical servers, again you may be able to put them into one job with additional licensing.

We run the Enterprise version and the agents are deployed and managed from within the console, they are managed via protection groups on the inventory tab and you can push the agents directly from the management console - you can't mix the physical agents and virtual servers in the same job.

We're currently running the free Windows Agent for our physical servers which seems to work well other than the fact you can't manage it fully from the console.

 

Quick Question : Does anyone know whether free Windows Agent for Veeam supports backing up to cloud storage. We've been testing cloud storage system however I can't see a way to backup the physical servers to our cloud repository? I've tried version 2 and 3 of the Free Windows agent but neither gave me the option to backup to cloud storage I've seen in some of the guides online?

 

I'm wondering if Veeam might require a paid licence if you want to backup a physical server to locations other than the default local storage repository (eg. Tape Storage, Cloud repository)

Thanks, just looked at our Veeam setup and stunned to find we are actually licensed for the Enterprise edition anyway, and within the new backup options 'Windows computer'

 

So shouldn't be too tricky after all, always assumed we only had Standard edition!

Just to confirm after checking you do require the paid version of the Workstation/Server agent if you want to backup directly to a cloud storage repository.

I'd virtualise the servers, MS and VMWare have on the fly conversion programs that both work a treat. That way, once virtualised your servers are safe, heck you can right click and copy the server to a USB drive if the worst came to the worst. Can't do anything like that on physical servers, if they go down you've got hours (or more) of work ahead of you.

90% of our servers are virtual, sadly the few remaining ones have to stay that way for specific reasons, e.g. 2 of them run Oracle instances and apparently the cost of Oracle licensing would shoot through the roof if they were virtual instead!
