Storage Server Recommendations?

Hi there,

 

We are currently running an HP X1600 G2 storage server with 10TB worth of storage. Just over 5tb of this is usable after mirroring.

 

The server has just 136gb of C:\ disk space for the OS which is Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Standard.

It has been totally full for years, and even after HPs best efforts, it has filled again.

The server is now out of warranty and HP are unwilling to provide anymore coverage, so I am looking to replace it.

 

Can anyone recommend what I could go for next and approximate costs so I can budget for it in the year ahead?

I had looked into getting the local C drive replaced with an upgraded larger one, but sadly, it is not possible as HP control the OS on this appliance and it is not possible to get copies of Storage Server 2008.

 

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I had suggested it to HP, but as it is raided and configured by them, they said it would just not be possible.

That might work. How much roughly do you think it would be in total to get it up to 10tb?

For the 10tb we currently just mirror. The server we have is used for the staff shared areas, onsite backups etc.

In other words they just cba to do it lol. Sad really because windows storage server was actually a good OS.

 

Other option ofc is to run disk cleanup cleanmgr or dism perhaps? Get rid of windows updates in dist and winsxs?

I know! Though, they did spend hours on it, but the issue was the lack of storage and could have been so easily fixed with a bigger drive for the OS.

I have had no complaints with the OS.

It got so full, disk cleanup etc will not even run. It is knackered. Still running the shares at least, but is bound to go wrong completely soon.

Right, adding another 2 x 600GB SAS drives would cost £80.

That would give you 18 discs totalling 10.8TB. If you deploy them in Raid 10 that's 5.4TB with 18x the read and 9x the write speed gain.

 

Since we're doing an offer on these this month, if you took two for a failover solution you're looking at £1,230 per unit as orders of two or more get you a £100 per unit discount

I have noted this all down and will put it into my request for the head.

I am assuming the servers will have no OS, so I need to factor in licencing costs for that.

Yep, licenses aren't something we can provide on a per-server basis. Though if you have a volume license subscription you should be able to use that (I think).
