davidstallwood Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 Hi, I have recently taken over running the IT dept at an average size secondary school (2500 students, 3 x Hyper Vs with 15 VMs, 350 Win 10 PCs & approx 75 laptops). I would like to ask fellow users what the best route for Microsoft licensing is. I have recently had licensing renewals from companies for thousands of £££s. What does everyone pay on average and for what? I look forward to your replies.
psumner1992 Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 (edited) Try Very PC, @johnlevis, they are very knowledgeable when it comes to Microsoft licensing and very good on pricing. From the sounds of it you would be looking at OVS-ES subscription agreement calculated based on staff FTE figures with desktop bundle to cover OS, Office, Core CAL suite plus licenses for 3 x Windows Server DataCentre to cover your Hyper-V’s (licensed by cores, minimum purchase amount of 16 cores and they come in 2 core packs) again covered under OVS-ES, not based on FTE. Unfortunately Microsoft pricing keeps going higher and higher every year. My advice, try and lock in a 3 year price deal to keep the same costs for 3 years. Hope this helps. jtotheb Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 3 x Windows Server DataCentre to cover your Hyper-V’s (licensed by cores, minimum purchase amount of 16 cores and they come in 2 core packs) again covered under OVS-ES, not based on FTE. If it's 15 VMs total, rather than 15 VMs per Hyper-V host then Windows Server Standard licences should come out loads cheaper. At 14 VMs per host Standard licences come in at 1/3rd the total cost of Server DC for our estate due to the core licencing model now. When it was per physical processor Server DC was much better value.
