Google Chrome - Prompt For Download Location - Reg entry.

I did a search on Google for "Ask where to save each file before downloading" in chrome and a few results were linked to threads on here, anyway, i found another site that had the answer via a Registry hack - https://www.stigviewer.com/stig/google_chrome_current_windows/2018-03-13/finding/V-79929.

 

The site states:

 

Windows method:

1. Start regedit

2. Navigate to HKLM\Software\Policies\Google\Chrome\

3. If the "PromptForDownloadLocation" value name does not exist or its value data is not set to "0", then this is a finding.

 

Upon testing, manually adding the above key and setting PromptForDownloadLocation as a DWORD - value 1 to a machine and tested with a user, the option "Ask where to save each file before downloading" is on as default and users cannot change it.

 

After testing this, i added a new user registry item to our STAFF Chome policy and set it to:

 

Replace | HKCU | Software\Policies\Google\Chrome | Value Name: PromptForDownloadLocation | Value Type: REG_DWORD | Value Data: 1. Also set to Remove this Item when it is no longer applied.

 

After testing this, those users this is applied to asks the user where they want to save the file.

 

If you want to apply this to computers, make sure you edit a computer policy and chage HKCU to HKLM.

This setting is also available in Google's ADMX templates for Chrome.

 

Policies > Administrative Templates > Google > Google Chrome > Ask where to save each file before downloading

I tried that and it didn't do anything in the settings, so i thought a reg hack might be the best option

 

EDIT: Actually, i don't see that setting in Group Policy. The only one i see is Set Download Directory.

Is the changes reflected in chrome://policy? Just to make sure its actually applying to the machine.

Following this thread, i've just been playing.

 

If you have both SetDownloadLocation and PromptForDownloadLocation enabled, the former takes preference.

 

I'd wondered for ages why Chrome was playing silly beggars.
