The user profile service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

Afternoon everyone. I have a windows 7 pro 64 bit machine in a windows server 2008 R2 Standard environment and no new user can login. The users that logged in before can still login but no new users.

 

I get the following message when I try to login The user profile service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

 

I have taken the pc off the domain and re joined but made no difference.

 

Any help would be much appreciated.

Make sure the C drive isn't full and ensure the user profile service is actually starting when the PC is booted.

The C drive is fine and User profile service is started.

 

Just checked in the Event Viewer and I got this.see below (i have removed the domain name and computer name)

Do you have UAC enabled?

yes, its on the default settings.

Do a search in C:\Users\Default for all .sqm files and delete them.

 

You may need to enable hidden files and folders and system files to see them. Once deleted, try logging in again with a user profile.

 

UAC can cause a denied access to sqm files when they try to copy from the default profile to the user profile.

I managed to fix it by following the suggestion in this thread http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-7/175467-user-profile-service-service-failed-logon.html

If you can, login as an admin, go into c:\users\

Unhide the folders if you can’t see ‘Default’

Right click ‘Default’, click properties, click ‘Security’ tab. Click ‘Advanced’ then click ‘change permissions’

Put a tick in

“Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object”

Then click ‘apply’
