Drivers for a new (ish) gaming graphics card.

I just got a Gigabyte NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 G1 Gaming graphics card and decided to use the GeForce experience software that auto installs the drivers.

 

Now, I was able to play Battlefiled 5 with ultra settings in 4k and at 144hz so I know everything is OK but wondered if I should have installed the drivers that are actually made for my card from the Gigabyte site? Am I missing some features of the card?

 

Also when I look at my card in devices or GeForce experience it lists my card as a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070, should it not have the G1 Gaming listed as in theory the card is slightly better than a standard 1070 card?

I could be wrong, but I would be using the Nvidia drivers over the ones gigabyte may have.

 

Have you tried the gigabyte driver to see if there is any difference?

Nah, if everything is running fine, leave it as-is. GeForce Experience lists a NVidia GeForce 1070 because, unsurprisingly, you have an NVidia GeForce 1070. My EVGA 980Ti Hybrid shows up as a NVidia GeForce 980Ti and those are the drivers I use.

 

The additional branding that manufacturers put on it doesn't make a difference to the fact that it's still a GeForce 1070 and it's using the same core as the rest of them. What the manufacturers do is usually provide custom fan curves, replacement coolers and a factory overclock, but it's still a 1070 at the base of it, so you have nothing to worry about

 

(There's sometimes some extra faff that ends up changing the actual board, but you don't need to worry about that unless you're slapping a custom water block on top)

It does list some drivers on the site for my card, but they could just be the Nvidia anyway.

 

As I am not having any issues I am just going to stay with the GeForce experience drivers.

Just a FYI cards that come overclocked etc normally have tweaked firmware so the drivers shouldnt matter as the card will run the way it's supposed too with them.

use msi afterburner to see graphics speeds overclock and tweak fan curves. it also installs rivatuner for fps overlays, frame limiting and it can capture. (can use quicksync, which is nice) it'll work with any card.

If your fan drives you up the wall like mine did, definitely tweak the fan curve with afterburner.

Just use the Nvidia drivers, they are updated out much more often.

Some games get a bit complain-y about Rivatuner, I remember DOTA 2 used to, dunno if they fixed it or not, but overall Afterburner and Rivatuner are fantastic bits of software.
