Unwanted compatible ink cartridges

We have 10 (!) compatible ink cartridges for HP Color Laserjet 1600/2600/2600n/2605dn/2605dtn/ that we no longer need as we don't have the printer anymore.

Can anyone suggest what we can do with them? It seems such a dreadful waste to just throw them in the bin

I had a look and I dont think the compatibles are worth much. I have some original Kyocera cartridges that I shall sell on ebay after Christmas as they are worth money, but these, not so much

my old school (academy) let me buy and sell on ebay no problem. This school is LEA and we are not allowed which costs the school money as we can't get the same bits for laptops and older bits and pieces go to waste.

I had same with some cartridges ordered in error with high restocking charge - we can offer them to other schools but not sure whether it will happen. Is there a local council intranet for offering unwanted stuff between institutions?

I have asked the MAT and they are very unhappy about selling on ebay due to lack of auditing accountability or something. Does any school do it?

this is true. But if we just void them off the inventory and throw them away, who is to say that someone might not take them out and sell them then? I know the big bins are scavenged by dumpster divers and also the company that owns the bins does go through them

I assume once you written off an asset the school has done their bit and what someone else does with it is their "problem". For example computer recycling companies re-sell hardware, parts etc so I assume the tax issue is solved when they do their accounts.

 

If you give or dispose of something I don't believe the VAT thing is an issue from the schools point. The computer recycling is a good example. If it was a problem the place would be full to the rafters of redundant assets.

Your accounts system can plead innocence with HMRC if that happens. Knowingly selling on something that VAT hasn't been paid on is a legal offence and risks the professional qualifications of any accountant sanctioning it. Yes, it is is unlikely to be picked up, but people like Mr gee40 would rather stay whiter than white... As he puts it, if something happened where HMRC did come digging he would rather not have not added fuel to the fire. Edited December 12, 2018 by elsiegee40
