How does this compare to OnLive ? I tried that for a little bit when my gaming PC was getting too old to play the latest games. I found it "acceptable". i.e. it wasn't as good using OnLive for games I could play on PC at the time, e.g. Batman, but on the plus side I got to play soem games I couldn't play at all on my PC. I remember at the time thinking the blurb made it sound like Citrix/RDP for games so was sceptical, but was pleasantly surprised.

 

This seems like OnLive taken to the next level?

 

it's quite pricey though isn't it at £26.95pm, not compared to buying a branding spanking new gaming PC, but you could buy the latest consoles for less (not trying to start a war here, honest )

 

BUT it does theoretically mean you can play the latest and greatest games on Linux

Yeah it's certainly not what you'd call cheap but I think it's reasonable really. Especially if they stick to their blurb which states that they will continually upgrade the servers to keep them up to date. CPU's have just been upgraded. There's talk of a jump up to 16GB RAM on the Discord so it does seem like they're staying true to their word.

 

I suppose it depends what you want it for. If you just want to play some Fortnite then it's probably not worth the money. If you want a central, decently spec PC for some work, Torrents (legal ones of course!) and gaming or you run Linux/IOS and want access to Windows, then it starts to become a little more reasonable.

 

I never had the pleasure of trying OnLive but I heard it was okay for it's time (providing you had the good interwebs at the time!).

 

Again, it all really depends on what games you want to play (which does make it quite niche!). It might not cut it for super twitchy gaming but I like to chill back with a controller and for that it works well. This was from Tuesday night. My brother only has a Surface so signed him up for Xbox Play Anywhere for £1, hopped him into my Shadow, downloaded State of Decay 2 then played some coop with him on Shadow and me on PC

 

 

This looks really interesting, think I may need to give it a try over Christmas as my gaming rig is in major need of updates and this is much cheaper!

 

Just remember, they take a while to Activate you! Due to demand, they're saying anything up to 15 days at the minute.

What do you use to render? Blender by any chance?

 

No - I'm currently just using a Samsung Gear 360 (2017) and the included software, which would seem to be based on CyberLink's PowerDirector. The camera has two fish-eye lenses, and video is recorded as a 4k file with two circular lens images in, you then have to transform each frame of video into equirectangular format before being able to do much else with it. This step takes ages, but should be hardware-acceleratable. I haven't tried using Blender for this step yet, but I will investigate - I should probably get hold of a better-quality camera before I put too much effort into it, though.

So for £9.99 I couldn’t say no, so I’ve taken the plunge to give it a try. Really interested to see how well it works as it’ll save me having to worry about upgrading my gaming PC if it’s any good, and give me an excuse to downsize my massive beast to a nice ultrabook .

 

Plus my work surface pro is now usable as a games machine when I’m travelling so its win win - provided it works as advertised!

Well I got activated in the early hours of this morning, however being slightly drunk didn't get around to logging in until now

 

Just setting things up and installing a few games. Haven't tried anything for the past few years knowing my rig wasn't really up to it so now having a think what to give a try!

 

Appears my machine is a GTX 1080/E5-2678 v3 (2.5ghz) at the moment.

Plus the main reason i got it was so i could play games at my missus's without having to log around my heavy gaming laptop, but unfortunately her internet is too slow for shadow to work :/

I'm currently working on a CS:Go video doing the same thing. For better accuracy with CS, I mapped the Left Mouse button to Caps Lock and then timed from the caps light coming on, to the first frame of the action appearing on screen.

 

Spoiler alert: my local PC is 50ms, Shadow is 130ms so it's 80ms slower. But honestly, against bots at least that's barely noticable. You have to try really hard to notice. Perspective, that 80ms is less than 1/3 of the average reaction speed (250ms).

 

Super competitive gamers aren't going to like it obviously but if you're even remotely casual like I am, it's pretty imperceivable.

Yeah I think that's the most common config. That's what i get these days 99% of the time. They got rid of all the older 2.1ghz in favour of the 2.5 and it's much better.

So decided that since I had this shiny thing to play with I may as well buy BF5 so had a play of that on single player + multiplayer, and for me it was perfect. Wouldn't have been able to tell it wasn't a local machine and playing everything at Ultra was great

 

Just trying to get the extra 1tb storage but it keeps erroring everytime I try and add it

Ah yeah they sell out really quick. Apparently, they only have a certain number allocated per day. Best bet is to try and grab one early in the morning.

I wanted to view the youtube video embedded by @MrMat and I get the usual "error url cannot be retrieved" the swgfl problem filtering. I'm using the staffproxy but embedded youtube always fails. How do other RM filtered people get around this? Can edugeek in future provide a url as well for us RM peasants?

I know i've downgraded the RGB from last build(not joking ), this card is huge it has its own support brace!

 

I know lots of people been saying bad stuff about RTX framerate drop, but BF V, on max settings RTX on at 4k is soooooooo good and get a steady 60 fps

Quick update...

 

I picked up a tiny £80, Atom Z8350 based PC from Amazon. Comes with Windows 10 and the CPU can handle the Shadow stream surprisingly well.

 

The main reason for the purchase was as a Network Drive/OneDrive sync. I've attached my external HDD, network Share and installed OneDrive so i can dump big files on it and it'll upload them to OneDrive while I sleep/goto work. I can then grab them from my Shadow without being limited by my home upload.

 

Plus, because it as Bluetooth as well, the Xbox controller syncs right up so I can use Shadow to play some games on the TV.

 

Overall, it's working well!

Another random update, I'm going full Shadow! Only as a test, just to see how plausible it is. Edited this video on there and it was relatively painless once uploaded. Still going to miss my PC though!

Cloud gaming firm Blade seeking investment after filing for bankruptcy

 

Company behind Shadow service has also been placed in receivership in France, claims it is a "victim of its own success"

The Paris Commercial Court began receivership proceedings on 2 March. The following day, Blade's US arm filed for bankruptcy in the California Northern Bankruptcy Court.

 

A day later, Blade posted a statement to the Shadow website, announcing it will undergo reorganisation of the company in order to "free ourselves of from the debt holding us back" from continuing to develop its technology.

 

The company claims Shadow "became a victim of its success."

 

Blade will now seek investors over the next few weeks, promising to announce its plans going forward once funding has been secured.

 

An FAQ on the site assures subscribers that their accounts, pre-orders and the service in general will not be impacted by these events.

 

Omdia analyst George Jijiashvili notes on Twitter that Octave KLaba, founder of OVHcloud, has stated his intention to buy Blade and its Shadow service through his investment fund.

 

However, Klaba apparently plans to focus on developing "European alternative to Office 365 [and] G-Suite" rather than building up the gaming service.

That's annoying, was only considering last week whether to skip replacing my personal pc with a service like this It's certainly interesting timing though, with one of OVH's main datacentres going up in flames last week!

 

I'm surprised that none of the big boys have brought out a service like this for home use yet, unless they just don't think its viable
