If you are worried about physical theft it would be a good idea to. Thought most places have an alarmed building, with a physically locked door containing their servers, I know not all schools have that luxury.

 

Question is... do you have a TPM chip in the physical hardware. ;)

If it's a file server I'd try hard to stay away from encrypting it, for larger schools it may well be enough to notice the drop in performance. MIS server thought is doable, but as above it would probably be more prudent to look at physical security if that's an option.

You shouldn't see a noticeable performance drop with BitLocker. Make sure your servers have a TPM (virtual TPM if VMs) and the disks support hardware encryption.

 

We don't encrypt Hyper-V hosts but we do encrypt at the VM level.
