Server 2019 vs Server 1809

So I know that Microsoft have split the server types into CB and LTSC, like they have with Windows 10. With the re-release of 1809/2019, I'm now looking at upgrading some of our servers and unsure which option would be best.

 

Is there any benefit of moving to the CB for servers? As that obviously moves away from the extremely stable model of installing the server OS and leaving it for years (only receiving security/critical updates). I'm just thinking that if I move say our SIMS server to CB and an update like 1809 happens again, what damage could be caused by this and is it worth the risk?

 

Microsoft have openly stated that Windows 10 LTSC is not recommended unless it's say, a production/factory machine that is mission critical and has to remain exactly as it is for current software to work. Do Microsoft hold Server 2019 LTSC in the same regard?

Put it this way - which servers do you run which you can accept being less stable though more feature rich? I'd imagine it'd be none or very few. For SIMS, I'd not fancy completing a (regular) update to find that SQL no longer starts due to a new and undocumented bug. Other people can beta test. Edited November 14, 2018 by 3s-gtech

unless theres a feature you need in current branch thats not in ltsb server i wouldnt bother personally i dont want a server doing an os upgrade every 6 months or so and whos to say it wont just install without asking (ive logged into 2012 servers before where just logging in triggered a message saying im rebooting in 5 mins like it or not and thats bad enough)

Server 2019 has a full GUI, the YYMM versions (like 1803/1809) are server core only.

 

For some roles (RDS for one, possibly NPS too if they haven't got around to sorting that yet) need a GUI.
