The users are reporting that Microsoft has downgraded their Windows 10 Pro license to Windows 10 Home without any warning this morning. There appears to be a critical problem with Windows 10 activation system as many users are encountering an issue that causes activation problems on their machines.

 

The growing number of reports point to a server-side bug with Microsoft’s activation system. According to the users, the reactivation doesn’t seem to work and Microsoft’s bug would downgrade Windows 10 Pro to Home in some cases...

But seriously... this issue is affecting multiple countries (including US, UK, Japan and Korea), and the common thread is those of us who have upgraded from Windows 7/8 Professional.

Best advice is to wait it out and don't try to reactivate as Home (especially if you run a Domain! ) as Microsoft are looking into it.

Around 5 p.m. ET, I started hearing reports from users on Twitter that their activation issues seemed to be resolved. Users were told to try going to Settings > Update & Security > Activation and then select Troubleshoot to run the Activation Troubleshooter to try to restore correct Activation status.

 

Note: I only had to click on Settings > Update & Security > Activation... and it then reactivated Windows 10 Pro when that tab loaded.

If you can't get rid of the activation error, don't worry, it should clear by itself, a Microsoft spokesman said – now that Redmond's techies have sufficiently bashed their machines with spanners

 

If waiting doesn't work, you could also try:

 

changepk.exe /ProductKey YOURP-RODUC-TKEYG-OESHE-RE123

Not had the error, must have upgraded mine properly.

 

Is amusing the billion or so computers that kinda rely on MS's servers being online, I'm sure this won't be a problem at all.

i don't know if its related but yesterday i had 2 windows 10 Edu 1803 PCs decide that they needed activating and looking at them they had magically changed channel from Volume to retail!!! weird

i had to put the GVLK key back in via Slmgr /ipk NW6C2-QMPVW-D7KKK-3GKT6-VCFB2

I've been changing all mine to retail, for some reason some weren't and were asking wsus for the business version of 1809, why there are 2 5GB upgrade files when every installation is the same apart from the key is another question
