ESXI server motherboard replacement

Hi all,

 

Unsure if correct section so apologies if not, we have a 3 esxi (5.1.0) 1 san setup here and one of the esxi servers has had a failed IDRAC unit so requires a replacement motherboard, our support is covering the replacement of the board but have said that firmware/configs etc is our responsibility.

 

I've reached out to a few contacts who have told me that as long as all cables etc go back in the correct place it should work without having to do anything, can anyone confirm this or is there anything I need to backup/restore or generally be aware of?

 

please bear in mind I'm a line 1 tech that's had the whole network dumped on me for over a year and wasn't around when it was setup! I do have a handle on some things but an expert I am not!

Looks like a Dell Server. You should be able to simply move the drives over and it will boot. If you do have an issue you might have to import the foreign config (DO NOT HIT CLEAR) in the raid controller.

Sorry for the slow reply it's been a rough week, yes they are dell poweredge r620 many thanks for the advice replacement is booked for next week.

I have had the motherboard replaced on one of my Dell Esxi server a few years ago and it was just a case of making sure the cables went back in the same ports. The Raid was picked up and booted fine with no problems.

 

Might be a good idea to have a backup of the hosts config just in case anything does go wrong.

Just as an update or if anyone stumbles over this thread with similar questions, once replaced and connected there were no issues, other than it not finding any OS (10 minutes of worried faces and panic before I realised it was looking to the disk rather than the flash card for the os )
