[sims] Can linked classes have different registers?

I want to find a way of having linked subjects in NOVA (i.e. on the same line, in the same block in the model) have different class registers.

The reason is that PE is often linked to another subject to add flexibility to the timetable. However, this causes an issue with the registers as the PE classes then have the same students on the register but in reality they are different as they teach the boys and girls separately

 

For example,

PE is linked with English.

There are 4 classes in the band and their timetable might be something like this

All of the English classes are taught as mixed (boys and girls) but on the Monday when 8x3 and 8x4 go to PE, PE take the 60 students and want to divide them up into a class of boys and a class of girls but the registers for 8x3 and 8x4 appear the same as the English ones and if I were to change them to suit PE they would no longer be correct for English.

If there is no change over between x1/2 pair and x3/4 pair in this block you could split the band into 2. Other blocks that need access to all of x1-4 could stretch across multiple bands in the same way that KS4 options subjects might.

There is a change over - for example the boys in 8x1 English will need to be in 8x2 for PE, while the girls in 8x2 for English will need to be in 8x1 for PE.

 

Since posting i think i have found a way using curriculum assignment by student to solve it as you can move a student for individual lessons - think it was meant for use with alternate curriculum or interventions but it can work to move a student for one lesson, for a specific subject but not others that are linked (e.g. what i am after) or the whole timetable if you wanted (not sure you ever would?!). Only thing is it looks as though it will be a time consuming process for the amount of changes (about 1/2 the students in the school's PE lessons) so if anyone does have a quicker way it would be appreciated.

Sorry I meant between pairs - e.g. 2/3 or 1/4. If you want to freely swap between just 1/2 and 3/4 you could just split the band in 2 and put English & PE in separate blocks. This would probably result in a simpler arrangement particularly if there were any ongoing changes in groupings.

Interesting idea.

Having thoughts about how it would affect the administrative side of things - musing out loud really.

We would need to use class labels as sometimes it is x1 and x4 that link while sometimes it is x1 and x2 so the automatic labelling would not work.

The linking also changes from year to year and also within year (my school do the flying start)- purely based upon when staff are free and increasing the flexibility of the timetable.

The links are also not known until the timetable is completed but as long as it was before the first import the changes could be made where necessary to break the model apart into smaller bits.

Would it also make reports and routines more burdensome as things will need to be done for more bands / blocks - they can probably be set up at teh beginning of teh eyar but they are likely to need to be redone at every timetable rather than using the standard ones.

 

And probably a whole lot more as well!

 

Appreciate the idea - I will go and have a little play around with it and see where i get to.
