My network is flat. We have recently bought new sound and lighting desks and both are capable of being driven by an app. I have set up an AP with a different SSID and put the ethernet port it's in, and the two the desks are plugged in to in to their own VLAN on the HP layer 3 switch. The VLAN has an IP address. I have setup a DHCP scope on my server for it. Every port on the switch is "untagged" in the default VLAN and "No" on my new VLAN. I have untagged in my new VLAN the ports which my desks and AP are in. Which VLANs do I tag/no/untag the ports (NIC Teaming) the DHCP server is plugged in to? Do I then do anything about VLANs on the servers NIC settings? My new VLAN doesn't need Internet access so routing through to there is not an issue.

OK so if you don’t need / want internet access from this new network then make it very simple and static assign IP’s to these devices.

If you go that way, the ports on the switch that you have plugged your AV kit into need to be reconfigured to not be on the default VLAN and just be untagged on the new VLAN you have created.

If you think about it like the ports you assign to the new VLAN are like being plugged into a stand-alone switch.

If you wanted to be able to access the internet and your main network then you would have to have the layer 3 switch setup to router traffic from the AV network to the main network, I’m not sure it worth the extra work to setup routing and ip helpers etc if you only need to control the desks from something like an iPad.

Or of course you could just add the new AV kit to the main network and you all good to go.

I had thought of just static IPing everything, but the trouble is this network is for a couple of select students who could be connecting different devices to control the light and sound desks. It's because of this I'd like DHCP to work, and also because it's students I don't want them to have Internet access, or connect to the main network.

setup the scope on the dhcp server and set iphelper address, as far as im aware it has to be done on command line though - atleast i couldnt find it on the webinterface last time i needed it.

I'd forgotten about the iphelper! Done, all working now.
