Just an odd question. How do you set your home drive in ad?

 

Just looked at ours and it’s \\fs\username$ and that folder is a hidden share on the file server.

 

Each folder has that user full permissions to their folder.

Our Viglen network had a share per user. Now our hidden shares are: Profiles$ and FldrRedir$ (Profiles for staff and students, and home folder redirection for staff and students)

 

The deeper structure looks like this:

 

Staff:

 

\\server\Profiles$\staff\username

\\server\FldrRedir$\staff\username

 

Students (current year 7)

 

\\server\Profiles$\students\2018\username

\\server\FldrRedir$\students\2018\username

 

Profile folders and home folders for staff and students sit on separate virtual file servers.

We always recommend against giving users full permissions to their home areas, as they can then manage their permissions and break things like backups.
