Hello,

Several of our buildings have digital signage that gets used during the day. However in the evenings and weekends when we have lettings they are not used. I was wondering if there is a facility we could use to display YouTube style adverts on these to generate additional income?

It might not be worth it but just a though I am bouncing around.

Thanks

It may be worth contacting an advertising company and making some tentative enquiries. If the buildings are busy of an evening and weekend, there is definitely potential to generate some advertising revenue.

I worked on a project a few years back, where a local authority were installing Digital Signage in one of their flagship buildings. When they costed the digital signage, the price that they were given was astronomical. One of the manufacturers offered them an alternative, which would have meant them giving up a little bit of space on their new signage for advertising, and the costs were almost halved. They did not take up the offer in the end, but it does go to show that there is revenue to be made from it.

It's worth sharing with an advertising company the types of events that take place of an evening and weekend, as they will be looking to target any advertising at a specific audience.

We use Google Slides running on Raspberry Pi for our signage, triggered by a script on the Pi. There's no reason why you couldn't write a script to kick off a youtube playlist ay 17:00 in place of the Google Slides file. May need some testing but in theory that would be a cheap solution.

Just be careful. How will you vet the ads so you are certain they’re compatible with an education setting?

Just because the kids aren’t there doesn’t mean that a third party won’t gleefully take a photo and get it in the local rag...

And the other problem with advertising is association. If the Aaaaaaaability Builders advertises on your site, how do you make it clear that this is what they’re doing and that the school has no idea if they’re reputable and is not recommending or “proud to be associated with” this company nor is it the “official builder” used by your school?

If you solve this, it will probably need to go before governors to ensure they’re happy that the reputational risk doesn’t outweigh the income.

@daveleonard we wouldn't get the revenue from the adverts would we?

@elsiegee40 it isn't just schools we have. We have separate facilities in separate buildings that have their own brand. For example sport halls, gym, swimming pool, conference rooms. Your comments have been noted though.

Thanks
