Arthur Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 Hopefully Google won't discontinue their unlimited Drive storage after this? 2
kidpressingbuttons Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 Anyone actually using this for cloud backups?
Primus Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 Yeah we've got over 200Tb currently in Google Drive on the backup account alone.
MartinRouterKing Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 Yeah we've got over 200Tb currently in Google Drive on the backup account alone. What software do you use to back it up?
Primus Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 Veeam backs up and then we move the Veeam files into Google Drive using Cloudberry.
Arthur Posted August 28, 2018 Author Posted August 28, 2018 Anyone actually using this for cloud backups? Currently only 2TBs worth. Like Linus I am also using RClone.
Arthur Posted August 28, 2018 Author Posted August 28, 2018 Assume I need a google edu account? For the free unlimited storage, yes. 1
kidpressingbuttons Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 I assume you are encrypting all the data you are storing?
Arthur Posted August 28, 2018 Author Posted August 28, 2018 I assume you are encrypting all the data you are storing? Correct. The accounts being backed up to also have 2FA enabled on them so you need a physical U2F key to login to them through a web browser.
Primus Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 Google Drive is encrypted in transit and at rest and the accounts all require MFA.
kidpressingbuttons Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 Just concerned at what information google could access if I were to use it to store veeam backups but I could encrypt those!
Primus Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 They'd be in breach of their contract with you if they started accessing data in your Veeam backups. Yes you can encrypt the Veeam backup itself but that does mean quite a performance hit.
Strawdog Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 Have you had any issues with throughput? Just recently tested CloudBerry for moving our Veeam backups to AWS Glacier and it gave an ETA of a week :\ The full backup is around 4TB (largest single file is 3.3TB) and it was averaging sub 1Mbps on a 100Mbps dedicated fibre which had next to no traffic due to it being summer. I went through all CloudBerry's suggestions, white listed the various .exes, made sure the thread count and memory usage were at default, checked server load was low, ran a speed test on the line, etc. They suggested it could be AWS throttling things at their end but I can't imagine Amazon limiting uploads to sub 1Mbps.
Primus Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 (edited) Performance seems ok-ish to Google Drive - we have a gig symmetrical fibre link and it seems to run at between 300 & 400mb/s - it takes the best part of a week to upload and I only upload each weekly synthetic from Veeam not any of the daily backups. Our full backup is around 7.5Tb but it's split into individual files per VM by Veeam. Edited August 28, 2018 by Primus
