Sporadically when browsing to HTTPS sites we are experiencing Chrome 'hanging' and then eventually showing an error of 'ERR_TIMED_OUT'

Anyone else running into the following problem on Chrome when using Windows 10 1803? It seems only to be specific to Chrome and not Edge. I originally thought it may be something to do with our proxy but even when I bypass that I experience this problem.

It's a bit of a long shot, but there is a fix for several certificate and cryptographic-related issues in the latest Windows 10 v1803 cumulative update (KB4346783). Does installing this make any difference?

  • Addresses an issue that causes computer certificate enrollment or renewal to fail with an "Access denied" error after installing the April 2018 update. This issue occurs when the registry process has a lower process ID (PID) than all other processes except SYSTEM.
  • Addresses an issue that, in some cases, failed to clear decrypted data from memory after a CAPI decryption operation was completed.

After extensive testing this is only affecting students where I am. They are using mandatory profiles. Putting my test staff account on a mandatory profile give the same results. Only finding 1803 workstations to be a problem.

Staff use roaming profiles, students use a manadatory profile that I created that has worked with 1703 but doesnt like 1803. Looking at creating a new one.

Hi, just out of interest, what machines is this happening on? What make and spec?

We have a very similar issue here but only effecting very specific machines at the moment as the image is used elsewhere and not having the same problem.

Thanks

Andy

@EvLPhenom they are Dell OptiPlex devices varying models. To be honest, I don't know if it's people tending to use Edge more or whether the update to Chrome but I don't seem to get anywhere near as many mentions about it now.

I used the mentioned website to create a new mandatory profile for students but this still causes Chrome browser to hang. In the end I have stopped student accounts pointing at my mandatory profile. Instead, local profiles are stored on every desktop they log in to. I have a gpo that deletes local copies after 24 hours on a reboot.

FWIW, I have never had any luck with James Rankin's instructions either. I don't think there's any way you can fully sanitize the registry which then leads to issues like the one @Manny-Tech describes.

Local profiles are definitely a lot less hassle!

@Manny-Tech thanks for the update.

I have tried the latest version of chrome and still having the same problems. Will continue to investigate and see what i can come up with.

It's supposed to be fixed in the June cumulative update for Win 10, mine started behaving a bit more once they'd had the September one installed.

Edit: I've got a mandatory profile for pupils but it's just a direct copy of the default Default User profile off Windows, with absolutely no modifications made to it. (Theory being it overwrites their cached local profile every time, so they go back to a clean setup)

This @Arthur.

I've stopped with any form of default profile on the netlogon share or using any guide to create one.

All my problems have gone away over the last few days. I can no longer get it to hang or time out.
