No, not the metal band!

There seems to be a new decentralised social network coming up called Mastodon. People set up their own servers with their own domain names to post stuff and the various Mastodon instances can talk to each other. Example: User A signs up on usera[AT]studenttalk[DOT]social and can talk to User B on userb[AT]techies[DOT]chat (URLS deliberately sabotaged by me just in-case).

This could be very hard to filter. That said, you can also use it within an organisation as your own social media server too (yournamehere[AT]edugeek.net ?)

errr

OK - there are good reasons that some people want to be able to be anonymous on social media but

this seems like a new and better way for people to use social media to troll people with no comeback - which is a problem

so while Facebook Twitter etc start getting grief about trolling of bullying victims etc all the way up to politicians then something else comes along which could let them carry on

Basically I can see a very good reason for all social media, comments etc be be directly traceable so that people become responsible for what they say and can be traced and held accountable - then the wonders pf the internet (no sarcasm - it is wonderful) produces a way around it

The internet and specifically the WWW was set up assuming people could be trusted

but now we have a problem

and I have no solution - but I hate the problems and the unforgivable messages that get sent

Letting everyone be traceable is ignoring places where being traced for speaking out will get you killed.

What you need is pseudonymity and trust ratings.

I don't care if you're MagicalSpaceBadger47 if you've proven yourself to make good comments. I don't care if you're John Smith of 12 Main Street, London, if you're always talking crap.

You can have multiple accounts, that's fine, but every one starts with a trust of 0.

My trust of MagicalSpaceBadger47 can be weighted differently from yours. Maybe you care more about Badgers, and I care more about Space and Magic, so I'd rank their contributions on those sites more than you would.

Block pages that contain bad words, doesn't matter what website they're using then. Teach people how to set up accounts to not receive messages from unknowns

The idea is users control each server which sets it's own rules and moderators instead of Twitter who are ignoring their own rules and poorly enforcing them. If a server is badly moderated and allows users to be abusive, then other server owners blacklist it from interacting with their users. The local timeline meanwhile shows just posts made by those on your server. But I can see how dedicated groups of troublemakers can abuse this.

From a filtering POV I imagine a decent content filtering system will pickup the system and be able to block it via code fragments, comments, etc.

Otherwise it will be the usual game of keeping them peeled, spotting traffic trends and playing whack a mole.
