Recycling companies and selling old equipment

Hi,

 

I’ve got a few pieces of IT equipment which isn’t needed anymore in school. Somethings have some value I have a couple of old servers I could get a couple hundred for and old switches which I could £20-30.

 

With budget cuts every penny counts and don’t want to giving things a way for free if get something back.

 

Spoke to my business manager they got to be written off and taken to governors. She didn’t go into detail but said selling anything would have to add VAT. Is there any other way I can do it and maximise the benefits to school.

 

I also need to know any free equipment recycling which is free and couple provide disposal certificates. We based in the North West.

Your business manager is correct about VAT. You haven’t paid VAT on them so you cannot legally resell them in the normal way.

 

Try contacting @Millgate with the make/model/spec. They will buy back if it’s worth anything to them. They deal with schools all the time and should be able to satisfy your BM.

 

Are they likely to be of use to another school? You could list them on the EduGeek Classified Adverts forum and your business manager should be happy with that.

Yeah happy for them to go to another school. I just have to go about it in a way which takes pressure/task of the business manager so she only getting it signed and filed etc.

 

Is there anything else I need to know about selling them. Guess we have to invoice them the buyer with vat then pay the vat where need to go.

We use a local WEEE registered recycler, they don't buy the items but anything we give them with a resale value we end up with a "donation to the school", gets round all the issues of selling items etc.

 

In the North West - the local one I use is Homepage - My Laptop Shop - it's free so worst case you have nothing of value, it's cost you nothing to get rid of it, otherwise you'll get cashback/donation.

 

I've also use PRM Green in the past, but they didn't do any cashback/donation for any of the items - it was just free of charge collection PRM Green Technologies

Yeah that sound good as if we recycle it don’t have to pay and if they clear and sell stuff on and send us a donation gets around all the paper work. Do they provide certificate as under GDPR we need one and a contract with them

You get a Waste Transfer Note, and then a data destruction certificate for anything you've given them with hard drives. Not used them since GDPR so not sure what might have changed (actually need to book them in as the pile of old kit is starting to get a bit too big)

I'd be interested to know if anyone on here has managed to sell / scrap their old kit for money. Our school just get a registered waste collection service to come and pick the lot up for free when we have too much to store but I'm sure they'd use someone else if there's money to be made. Seen a few youtube videos of people taking motherboards in bulk to the scrap and making a fair amount of money but they seem to be either USA or AUS based so not sure of that type of thing is available in the uk.

 

Also as far as servers are concerned is there some requirement of schools having to keep them for a period of time or as long as the information is backed up and then wiped can they be sold too?

We use Recycle IT. I was given their details by the LA, who also use the same company for all old council equipment. If there is a fair amount of kit, they will collect for free and you get a cheque from them a few weeks later if there is any value in the kit that they have collected, along with any required Certificates of Destruction etc for WEEE compliance.
