Couple of questions about migrating from Gapps to Office 365

So I'm in a bit of a sticky situation. I want to move all our users that are currently sitting on Gapps to Office 365.. I have some questions that you guys will know better than I can find out if you don't mind:

 

1. If I verify the domain on Office 365 to show we own it will this stop Google working?

2. I want to create a single sign-on and sync it up with AD. Gapps currently isn't synced with AD although their current email address is put into each user for a Spiceworks Helpdesk and we're changing usernames on AD/Email so it's under the format [email protected] and also their AD login is jsmith instead of how they login currently which is john, john2 etc..... What's the best way around going about this? Each way I can think of will take something down. If I change their email in AD it'll stop Spiceworks working as that email won't exists yet. I can't create a batch of brand new users because some are actually in the format jsmith already so their account will be kept? Or is there a way I can create users on Office 365 which aren't synced with AD and then when we do the change over re-do all users email's on AD and then sync will Office 365 pick up the current user accounts and match them with AD automatically

3. Is it reasonable to think I can do this over a night or will the process take much longer? I've currently got 1 user added to get it all setup as much as possible before hand?

1) Usually, to verify that you own the domain MS ask you to add a TXT DNS record to it. That shouldn't stop Gapps from working

2) Up to you. You can prepopulate the users in Office 365 and then sync them later on if you want. You just need to make sure that the email address field in the AD user properties matches the same in Office 365.

3) You may be able to do this overnight but bear in mind that you're going to have to change DNS records for the changover from Google to MS to work. DNS changes aren't instant so you HAVE to make sure that your organisation is aware that a bit of mail may be lost while the internet catches up. That's assuming you're not using a third party cloud mail filter anyway.

2. Azure AD Connect settings allow you to map AD user accounts to an alternate email address, there are several options that will enable you to provision Office 365 users that are synchronise with AD and you shouldn't break anything.

3. I would allow more than one night!

Setting up 365 does not stop Gapps as your just using a text file to show 365 you have access to the domain records. Until you update the MX record in DNS your systems would work side by side.

You would be able to e-mail out on your 365 account straight away, but replies would return to your gapps account if sent to an external address, so once you migrated accounts over users would have to know that some messages might be delayed 24 hours, so best scheduled for a Friday evening in your business environment.

Hi Everyone

 

Sorry to bring up an old thread but hoping you could help me!

 

So now I have some time (kind of) to look into this a bit more I've found that our domain businessnamehere.co.uk has actually been purchased by a separate company on our behalf. Obviously I'd like to use this on our 1&1 account which apparently is possible to transfer domains to another 1&1 account. When doing this it will stop our website working but that's ok as soon we are moving to a new website anyway so I can tie it in with this although I'm presuming it will stop our Gapps working also? Would I have to verify the domain etc again with Google after transferring do any of you know?

You will not need to verify domain ownership again

 

GSuite will only stop working as the MX records will need to be reset. Once added everything will work again.
