Has anyone looked at this yet?

 

im having a brief play with it on a test domain and have come across an interesting side effect. currently its all on default settings and all i have done i install the msi client on my test vm but ive come across some unexpected behaviour (at least to me). From the network share i have setup with just odds and ends useful files in (read text files with copy and paste stuff) i cant actually read them in notepad i can in word but it seems to of classified my file share as a secure area to which my test user has no access (screen shot below) any ideas ass im not sure where to even start though my guess is i need the msi on the server so it can look at files

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking, but if you can read an encrypted file in Word but not in notepad it's because Word has integrated support for Azure Information Protection while notepad doesn't. In order to view the file in notepad you would have to use the client to decrypt it and produce a plaintext version.

its not an encrypted file (or at least shouldnt be) it just a file that was on the server before starting to play with the setup. same as i cant open any bmp files from that location in paint. i can open the txt file in word but it contains literally one line of text for me to copy and paste (the temp domain name is a load of alpha numeric gibberish so i just deopped it in a text file for when needed)

 

it appears as if every pre existing file on the server (and bear in mind its a test setup so thats about 10 files) is unreadable in anything but an office app. its as if the vm has decided once i installed the protection software that everything is protected even if it dosent need to be rather than stuff thats protected id protected. new files i create on that vm are fine and can be read but if i create a text file on the server the pc cant open it in anything but word

Didn't notice your second screenshot previously. It is referring to Windows Information Protection which I'm not really familiar with but it's a different product to Azure Information Protection, isn't it? Are you sure you installed the correct client msi?

it should be when i as turning it on in azure is said something along the lines of click here for the client msi

I have the Azure Information Protection client installed on my PC and when I right-click a file I can see an option "Classify and protect" on the context menu. Have you got that on yours?

yes but it dosent seem happy with txt files (or at least these) and as far as i can tell they arnt encrypted the server reads them fine. heres what i get the back aip window is for a file on the network the front from a local file on the users desktop

It appears to me that Windows Information Protection is preventing you from accessing the txt file. I've never seen that error message when just using Azure information Protection.

 

Unfortunately I'm not familiar with WIP so I can't offer any suggestions.
