USB CD/DVD Drive SD Cards etc - staff access GDPR?

Hi All,

 

Just interested to learn since implementation of GDPR if you have put in plans or already have totally eliminated the use of SD Cards, USB pens, CD/DVD drives etc across the network for staff and students. If so has this been met with any backlash from SLT, Heads of Depts, and other staff?

 

We have currently gone for a belt and braces approach and I think we may end up having to adapt our AUA to allow staff to continue using certain removable media devices. eg. 3D printer requires files to be put on an SD card, Recording of spelling tests MFL and playing back of content on record-able devices, music department use content from CD's and load this onto the computer etc.

 

How are you managing this?

We have carried on largely as before... USB sticks were already bitlockered. We've updated the staff handbook to mention clearing cards and recorders as soon as data is used/transferred and not leaving site with equipment. We've also bought a few meaty shredders that will cope with shredding other media. Staff have been given multiple options for accessing things offsite without having to carry them around with them - RDP, OneDrive and DirectAccess. I think we have 2 members of staff who stubbornly continue to use Sticks still and they have acquiesced to bitlocker.

All of our staff either have their own (or loan access to a) college owned laptop which uses either Direct Access or a VPN to provide remote access, our SLT decided to ban the use of any external devices for storing any data whatsoever, except where such a device is essential (e.g. the SD card in a camera.) If they know they will be going somewhere out of the reach of a wifi connection they may download the information onto their laptop as it's Bitlockered. No resistance so far from anyone, and it seems to be working.

 

Students may continue to use USB sticks etc for their own work; in fact we encourage it to incubate a healthy respect for having a backup of your own work.
