[ipad] Retrieving older version of app from iPad?

I have an iPad 2 with an older version of our Visitor Book on it (SwipedOn) - this version works perfectly.

 

I need to put the app onto a second iPad, but the version that I can currently download has a bug in it, not all of the traffic goes through the proxy and it gets blocked by the council's Firewall so we don't get an up to date list of visitors on the iPad. This is a pretty big bug and so I want to stick with the older version.

 

Is there any way to copy it off the iPad 2, and onto an iPad Mini (also ios 9 but obviously not the same model of iPad?)

 

Would a backup / restore work to a different model?

Hi Bev, I went the other way Mini to iPad2 and it restored fine, so going iPad2 to mini should be OK.

Major flaw in my plan! It would appear backups don't backup apps anymore, presumably because you can redownload them. But obviously I can only redownload the latest version and I am in need of the older version.

You will need to sign into the iPad with the same Apple ID, by the way you are breaking licensing rules....

I have lots of copies of the license and I am paying Swiped On £400 a year for the privilege of using an app that doesn't work now that they have updated it.

 

I'm not clear on which licensing law I am breaking.

 

The app was purchased with a VPP license, and the iPads don't have AppleIDs on them. I did a manual backup using Apple Configurator to my Mac, but when I restored it, the App wasn't restored - presumably because you can just redownload them from the App store. But obviously that would get me the latest version and I want the old version that I had.

My knowledge is dated here but worth trying.

I had a first gen Ipad we’re talking 2010 IOS 5.

When I synced the ipad with itunes on my PC it put copies of the apps / ipa files in my music library.

This path still has ipa files today.

Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Mobile Applications

Would an older version if Itunes allow you to do a full backup / restore?

It sounds like Apple has changed things, but worth exploring.

Unlike an iCloud backup (which I'd assumed you were using) uses an Apple ID, a manual backup via Configurator only backs up user data and settings, no apps get pushed out.

 

If you are using Configurator then why not just just remove a copy of the older app from one iPad and give it to another...?

 

Trying to use back doors and hacks with iOS apps will only cause you pain in the long term
