Just wondering how you folks out there deal with staff/students storing copyright material in their google drive or one drive - as I've seen a few here load their entire music collection on there, or a load of films dumped on there!

Obviously there's no way we can monitor this or stop this, and warning people not to do it is a waste of breath. I'm just curious as the legal stance on this - its our G Suite domain, and some users have a lot of copyright material in there - does that make the school liable or the individual?

You could put a regex for *.mp3 /filetypes etc as a rule. You could then get a notification email and an audit trail.

Of course, the user could rename the file but it might work (not tested it as I've only just started working with rules)

I've only had a brief look at the rules, but don't they only apply to users sharing files outside of the domain, not to files being uploaded into their own drive?

That's what I thought initially. When we turned it on we found it scans and notifies on all files, whether they are shared or not. If they are shared externally it will unshare and prevent them from being shared - but it notifies you anyway. It is the sharing externally which is likely to result in legal action so it would be worth doing for that alone.

I've not actually got this working yet but please post back if you do.

Hmm cheers, I might look into this, not sure what regex will work though as you can't specify *.exe or *.mp3 according to their help pages.
