author login doesn't allow text input

When I sign in as an author or as an editor (I have separate usernames

for each of these and they seem to show up correctly in admin), I can enter a title and choose a category, but the Input Text box is always grayed out. I read through the Joomla userguide but may have missed something. Can someone help? Also, with no of the logins I tried (registered, author, editor) is there a link to input links as suggested in the joomla userguide. Is this a problem or is this the way the edugeek templates are designed?

have you set an editor for the users to use if not there might be a problem with you permissions.
