Unable to Power on Dell Server

Hi everyone,

 

Purchased a used Dell PowerEdge R515 (Used) off eBay to do some training in the Home Lab. Unfortunately the previous owner (I believe?) disabled the Power Button operation within iDRAC so I'm unable to power on the Server using any physical button. I've tried to login to iDRAC 6 Enterprise w/ root/calvin but it doesn't work as they must have changed the password.

 

Any idea how to progress from here? Is there any way I can use something like PuTTY to SSH into iDRAC to reset the password?

 

Only machine I can do anything with is a Dell Latitude D505 as none of the other computers have serial/ethernet ports as we're a Mac Household

Is there a config reset switch on the idrac card? You will probably have to pop open the machine.

I'd doubt you'd be able to use putty(telnet) or SSH to reset password as this would be a sure way to circumvent any security on the device without physical access. If they have gone that far to disable the power buttons they'd prob done a whole lot more.

 

Reset button will prob be your only option.

 

I'd Google, you'd prob find something on YouTube or post a question, as these are pretty cheap servers there are bound to be some floating around for Home labs. I'm even interested my self in replacing the IBM x3650 I've jus bought :-( .

Nope, the Server won't boot up to the point of me being able to access the BIOS, it's as if the Power Button is non existent/broken. The only hope of getting it turned on is iDRAC related (i.e Password Reset or resetting completely).

I think there is a jumper or 2 on the motherboard (somewhere around the memory banks/processors) that you can use to clear the bios and drac passwords.

Is it more trouble than it’s worth? I can easily return it and don’t want to void the eBay Money Back Guarantee by opening up the unit and messing around in case it gets broken more.

I've seen hardware in the past (mostly really old Sun boxes) that won't power up from the ILOM(iDRAC) or the physical power button when the thing was actually broken and needed the motherboard replaced. The logs show up in the ILOM(iDRAC) as a simple "failure to power on".

 

Gut says if it's not reached you a fit condition to turn it on it needs to go back or the supplier needs to provide support on at least the iDRAC password to get further into it.

Not sure where you've got to with this, but I've just looked inside our old Dell server (I was trying to find out what model of HDDs are inside ours; separate thread coming about that...)

 

On the inside of the cover there was a very helpful schematic. It shows where the jumpers are to reset idrac and bios passwords are. Hope that helps.
