We're looking at setting up sharepoint sites for a few things but we're a bit confused by the different ways to create them, hoping someone here can give us clear instruction.

If i go to create a site, i get an option popup asking me if i want to create a "Team site" or a "Communication site". If i create either of those, i can see them in the list of sharepoint sites when i go to admin center > sharepoint admin > preview new sharepoint admin page (i have no idea how i find it in the old sharepoint admin) and when i go to "site settings" with the settings cog while in sharepoint, and then go to "Site hierarchy" i don't see the sites i've made, or any of our communication or teams sites there.

However when my tech clicks on create a site, he just gets a name your site box pop up. The sites he creates show up in the site hierarchy in the sharepoint site settings page. However the ones he creates do not show up at all in the sharepoint admin center.

What's the deal here? what's the recommended way of creating them and administering them now? we're going to be doing a lot of custom permissions for classes etc. so we want whichever way is going to be the easiest to manage.

The sites in question are only going to be used to display a web page of information such as links to documents, youtube videos and other information on a particular unit, so we don't need all the onenote etc bits that teams have with them if that matters.
