Splitting a mailmerged document?

A user asked me how she could split a mailmerged document into separate documents?

 

I have googled and found nothing!

 

Any suggestions?

There is an option to merge to a new document but as far as I know I don't think that there is a built in option to split these out into separate documents. Hopefully someone will be along shortly to prove me wrong.

What do you mean? Are you wanting to get 10 separate documents instead of 1 document with 10 sections? If so, I can't thing of a way you can do it directly; you could do a simple macro that steps through each section, copies it, creates a new doc and pastes into it.

 

Why is this wanted? There might be another way of achieving what's wanted!

As far as I can tell it's as follows.

 

Member of staff takes 150 students details such as address, parents first names etc and then merges all of these into a letter to send out to the parents. They then print out the resultant merged document. Then they want to save the document as 150 separate letters to keep on file.

 

Does that make sense?!!

From a common sense(i know that it is genetically limited in teachers) point of view it would be far better to just save the result file with multiple pages. Why fill a directory with 150 individual files, what do they plan to do with them. If they want to email them their is a separate option in mailmerge to do this to that they don't have to attach them all individually.

I would say the easiest solution would be to open up the Excel spreadsheet with all pupil information, then copy the required information into a new spreadsheet. Save this new spreadsheet and then merge with the Word document.

 

You'll then have just the data required. Hope this makes sense.

It does make sense!

BUT it does seem weird that it isn't an option within word.

You can have a look at MS Word Split from Sobol Soft. It also has a utiltiy for the reverse operation, joining files. Edited April 18, 2008 by m2d2
