Our Primary School has a Server 2012 R2 standard acting as a HyperV host. I want to get a Datacenter licence and upgrade the Standard edition to Datacenter. This would then allow me to add as many server VMs as I need. At the moment the VMs are 2008 R2 perpetual licences so need replacing soon.

Is this possible or would I need to rebuild the Host as Datacenter?

As long as you have the licence for Datacenter you can run the host on Standard edition.

So I don't actually need to change the edition as long as I can show I have the licence?

Doesn't even have to be running on Windows - we have 3 x Windows Server datacentre licences to cover all Windows VMs running on our 3 VMWare hosts.
