Microsoft exploring new ways to cool data centres

Microsoft is in the process of locating a submerged data off the Orkney Isles. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-44368813

 

The theory being that the energy use will be reduced by the sea cooling it.

So they are saving cooling costs but I cant see a lower cost of manufacture and they cant repair dead servers unless they bring it up!

Why are they not using that wasted energy for something useful?

Heating up the North Sea isn't a particularly environmentally friendly option.

I guess they will make them modular, so if a server dies, you bring up the duff module, replace with an new module and then take the old one back to the repair shop. I bet failure rates are low enough now not to worry.

It had been done before by Sealand - HavenCo , although with M$ involved and no private customers, it will probably last longer.
