...Well...if a device was always available to everyone...why would there be a need to share?

...I think I get what you mean - but I am a little surprised to hear it given the "1:1" label. So its a bit like every classroom has sufficient tablets for any class that arrives there....but when students go to the next classroom they have a different device - so they need to logon all over a again to google or O365 ...tedious but doable....

And without apple's classroom management bit...the next student will find the previous student's details cached and sessions open....and will have an eclectic mix of messages and pictures left for them to discover....

1:1 as interpreted by Apple would mean every user has their own device.

Under some BSF programmes this was called "virtual 1:1" I had to say I objected because the essence of a 1:1 programme is to make the IT ubiquitous, like say a student's exercise book and pen. Mind you that is not to say that a true 1:1 programme would have any better outcomes that the virtual.

We're set up the way @peej2k describes. I've tended to avoid the term 1:1 but haven't really found a better alternative. We have Chromebook's in lockable charging units in each classroom and a bank in the staffroom. There are enough for every pupil, in every classroom. This arrangement reduces the risk of damage 'in transit'. In fact, seeing school bags used as goalposts regularly, I don't think we'd want them transported around! The login process is less than 10 - 20 seconds so in practice, we find it works well and not tedious at all.

We have run a 1:1 ipad scheme since 2014 , students issued with them in year 7 and parents paying for them by monthly instalments over 3 years .

Apart from inevitable abuse and distraction , the biggest issue we are facing is breakage of the front glass - this was a major headache from day one , but now even a bigger one ..

This is because the iPad Air 1 was relatively cheap to repair, the glass digitizer is around £50 plus labour.

iPad Air 2 and the latest one however are a different prospect - the digitizer and LCD are bonded and both have to be replaced together - at £200 a time, plus labour !!

We used to go via an insurance company for repairs , but the hassle involved meant a long wait for repairs so now we charge parents a repair "insurance" and use our own repairer.

I have a feeling we are now onto a loser with Air 2's and newer ones though ..

So this is another consideration with iPads - kids are kids , give them iPads and they WILL break them , and the expense can be enormous...

I thought the latest non-pro iPads (2017 and 2018) had the iPad Air construction and repairability as a direct consequence of feedback regarding this issue with the Air 2 and Pro?

You are absolutely right, I stand corrected - hey thanks psydii !!

Hadn't realised as only our Y7's have them and they tend to be careful with them!

So- we only have around 450 Air 2's to worry about now - especially when they are are all paid for , they then get broken and parents dont want to shell out for a repair - meaning we then have to supply student with a loan one :(

We're in a similar boat but have iPad pros. We're being charged around £300 per broken screen and the repair job is not always great. We've actually started sending them back to apple to get a replacement. It wasn't much more to send them to apple and get a new device.

It's nice to hear the latest iPads are built differently. We've got some iPad 9.7 5 Gens and will be getting more iPad 9.7 6 Gens this year. Our iPad pro lease is finishing next year so can swap most of them out for the new iPad 9.7. Our staff will still need the Pros due to having an apple keyboard.

Surprised to read others with iPads sending them off for repair? We just got a heat mat, get replacement parts and do it ourselves.

Which heat mat have you got - how well does it work?

We send them off for repair simply because we haven't got the man power to do it in house.

Yes, same here - although I do enjoy repairing laptops etc, you do need to concentrate to do something like that so it tends to be a holiday job as we are always getting pulled away on a school day to do something else

Therefore it woulldn't work too well for ipads when we get 2-3 broken ones per day...
