Do you use Google Classroom?

Hi,

 

We are moving to G Suite in September and we have also started looking at Google Classroom. I am having trouble getting my head around what Google Classroom actually does and some of the terminology it uses so I wonder if someone at another school which uses Google Classroom can let me know how you have it set up there and how/if it is used.

 

What would you set up a Google Classroom for? Every class (e.g. a Google Classroom for 11T/En4 and another one for 7H/Ma6)? Google's examples seem to have a Classroom set up for every period but that seems overkill to me.

 

Do you create Google Classrooms by linking it to your MIS or do you leave it to teachers to set up their own Classrooms?

We use Classroom with all teaching groups. So every timetabled class gets a Google Classroom associated with it. Teachers use it to communicate with their classes, share resources, set assignments/homework and to give feedback. Parents also get the daily/weekly updates on set work.

 

I sync Classroom to SIMS using a few scheduled reports and GAM. However, there are lots of ways of doing this.

 

Classroom is also used for staff training courses and some out of school clubs.

We use it and have it set up so each of our classes is exported from our MIS (we use SalamanderSoft) . Users and groups are synced from AD and we're just starting to migrate our email to GMail. We use Google classroom as a digital store for learning materials and setting homework. It's not fully embedded into the school day but it's a really good set of tools and they're free.

Thanks for the response. Just to clarify, if a teacher taught 11T/Fr2 three times a week, would there be three different Google Classrooms set up that week, then another three set up for next week or would there be one Google Classroom set up for 11T/Fr2 that gets used every time that teacher teaches that class throughout the whole school year?

Just one Classroom per class - not per period. You can have multiple teachers per class.
