MatthewL Posted May 29, 2018 Posted May 29, 2018 Has anyone with success implemented a point to point wireless link over say a 9 mile distance? If so any hints and tips for it? I think the height of the dish is going to be my issue due to the terrain but but anything else I should watch out for?

And if you can get unifi gear then you have all the tools you need in their software.
Fazza Posted May 30, 2018 Posted May 30, 2018 We use one of these for a 160Gbps (I know it's not 1Gbps like you asked but we've had it a few years now and they may have a newer model at that speed): It's not line of site so things like a tree being in the way hasn't hindered our installation! The model we have goes up to 31miles although I think you'd need a bloody good pair of binoculars at both end to get it lined up the best you can!

DalekSec Posted May 30, 2018 Posted May 30, 2018 (edited) +1 for Ubiquiti gear, we use a lot smaller gear here (under 500 meters) but simple to setup and is basically the same as the higher end gear just less powerful. All you need is line of sight for PTP gear, also make sure there isn't anything that moves into line of sight, seen problems in the past where the PTP had a train track in between, lost a few seconds everything a train went past! Edit: Turns out our PTP is slight overkill for the distance! We use the AC-Gen2: https://www.ubnt.com/airmax/nanobeam-ac-gen2/ Which can apparently do 15km! No wonder they do 500m so well... One been in a village in a dip which doesn't help. Due to the kit required I think this little project is out the window till a time with more money. To have a dish that high would require some pole which is another problem. 2

I've got a link between buildings (two sides of a main road) and the link distance is 82m with a speed of 650mb and it's never missed a beat. You would struggle to know you weren't on the end of 1gb fibre!! Next project for me is a 860m link up to the sports pavilion to enable wifi at the playing fields

MatthewL Posted May 31, 2018 Author Posted May 31, 2018 Pass, its all still quite new to me, never done anything on this scale before, only ever linked two Belkin AP's together as a bridge years ago from a wireless link point of view.

AJWhite1970 Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 On the AC-Gen2 if you manually set the distance the two dishes are apart by putting in the two long/lat coordinates it automagically sets the channel width and signal power accordingly which is a good starting point. Then you use the alignment tools in the Air OS to tweak to find stable settings. 2
