Not sure where to put this, but as you will see I am thinking it is hardware related so....

As I was leaving yesterday a teacher asked me to look at a problem with Youtube on our hall pc.

It's quite old (HP dc5800) running Win 7.

I tried with IE and with Chrome and with multiple videos, but got the same error every time (with different number and letters) although Chrome just has a spinning circle.

I Googled all the fixes, from resetting IE (and clearing cache/cookies), to Google DNS, to deleting and reinstalling the graphics card driver.

Today I thought I would just go for broke, I moved it to my office and put in a new hard drive and installed Win 10.

That to me rules out filtering, as it was on my office VLAN (and my pc plays Youtube videos ok), GPO (not connected to the domain), IE settings and pretty much everything! But now I'm just getting a spinning circle... It will however play Vimeo and MSN videos.

The GFX is an intel Q33 Express Family Chipset, but it's not actually possible for that to be the problem is it?

I'm stuck! Does anybody have any ideas?

Hi Koldov,

I have the exact same issue in our school. This started yesterday and is present on all the computers (Windows 7), "An error has occurred..." with IE and a spinning circle with Chrome and Firefox.

We are with the LGfL, so naturally I checked their Service Desk and removed the DNS settings to bypass the youtube restricted mode with no luck. so far I have done the following;

Graphics and audio drivers are on point and all working.

Speakers are plugged in etc.

Bypassed all GPOs and used local admin accounts

Flushed DNS, used googles DNS settings directly

Imaged a classroom PC with the same image we are using across the site and kept it off the domain

Updated Adobe Flash player and shockwave player for the hell of it

Other services like BBC iPlayer and Twitch.tv still works fine. We've never had any playback issues with youtube before. I really don't understand why this isn't working!

Currently installing Windows 10 Enterprise on a test machine in the office to give it a go.

Hi all!

*URGENT UPDATE*

Guess I am going to have to eat my words regarding my belief it was hardware and not filtering...

In desperation I decided to do an IP report on the computer from our filtering (LGfL).

You will see below what has been denied... Has there been a change in classification on WebScreen 2.0?

DENIED.jpg

I couldn't believe nobody in class had used Youtube since I first discovered the problem, so I presumed it was just this machine!

Today of course everybody wants to use Youtube! So as a temporary measure I am going to allow 'Host is an IP' and 'Social Networking' (as we filter by the categories LGfL give us) and hope nobody notices.... Facebook all day anyone...?

Seriously though, I am going to raise the question via the TRUSTnet helpdesk and ask what has changed - but I need a better solution!

Here is my question to TRUSTnet... I just hope I have not been too hasty blaming them, I would be grateful if anyone can corroborate my findings.

Hi,

Since the middle of the week I have had all the teachers complaining that YouTube videos will not play.

I will cut a long story short about the amount of work I and my colleagues have done so far to try to remedy the problem, because yesterday I pulled an IP report for one of the affected machines.

I have attached it so you can see that most of YouTube has suddenly been denied!

There has been no change to the filtering at my end.... 'HOST IS AN IP' and 'SOCIAL NETWORKING' have ALWAYS been denied for teachers and I can't in good faith allow these categories through the filtering!

Can you please tell me why all of a sudden there seems to have been a reclassification of these to deny Youtube?

Many thanks in advance.

Regards,

I have just had a reply from TRUSTnet confirming there has been a reclassification of a Youtube related URL....

You would hope that such a sweeping change to the categorisation of a very popular URL, would prompt them to fire out an email...? Surely they must know that would break it for anyone blocking those categories...

Could have saved myself a whole days work resetting, stripping down and rebuilding, installing Win 10...

Saw this this morning in our primary, they recategorized googlevideo.com as social networking, the buffoons!

Yeah, this was confirmed in the reply I had from them.

At least you didn't spend the day trying to figure out what was wrong with the PC's... :getmecoat:

Anyway, I'm not happy with their answer as it appears they believe that 'googlevideo.com' had always been in the 'social networking' category and while investigating an issue where some schools using Chrome but blocking Youtube have suddenly been able to access the site, saw that it was in the 'entertainment' category and thinking that was the problem, switched it into the 'social networking' category, where they believe it should be.

Now, I do not believe this to be the case... We have had the same categories (including 'social networking') blocked for well over 2 years, with no Youtube issues.

Not to rub it in, but it took a couple of minutes! step one is to try incognito to rule out any cache issues, step 2 was to check the network inspector and see the requests failing!

I got the very same answer on my ticket. Very frustrating as you would think they would of placed an announcement on their Service Desk like they normally do!

Well, digging a little more for clarification, I don't believe they were expecting the reclassification to have any impact...

And I quote:

It was initially categorised back in 2014 to Social Networking to bring it in line with all other YouTube changes.

The URLs were documented initially and outlined in our FAQ which is where we direct schools wanting to unblock YouTube to just to make sure the 4 correct URLs are added.

So, it seems 'googlevideo.com' should have always been in the local allow list... and therefore regardless of its category, it should have been allowed through.

Thanks @Koldov, @Obzen. Just came across your thread after a few hours trying to sort this issue. Even had an open ticket with Atomwide saying "I'm having problems playing videos recently. Can I check my DNS settings are correct and up-to-date." No mention of this problem.

Just checked the other LGfL schools we look after and they have open tickets about this issue too. As you said all it needs is a service desk announcement.

@JohnJackson - this is why schools get frustrated with LGfL/atomwide.

Colleagues, I haven't forgotten the points being made above and I'm looking at the quality of services that are being provided to schools at the moment. I can sense the frustration and please be assured if I can make changes then I will.
