Choosing new Servers - Best way to implement

Hi everyone,

We currently have one server 2012 host that is running dhcp, dns, and AD, domain controller.

The server then also has 1 HyperV machine running Sims.

 

The servers on its way out and Im looking at how to move forward.

 

I'd thought of getting a new server with about 64GB RAM and have everything virtual. So a VM running dns, AD, and domain controller, a VM running DHCP, and one running Sims.

 

Now I'm confused on the way of doing this. Do I get one install of Windows Server and am I right it lets you install only 2 HyperV machines?

Then I would need seperate licenses for installing server 2016 on each VM yes?

Can I have more than 2 VM's?

Never done it before so would appreciate all the help.

If you're using "standard" server you get 2 VMs if you use data centre you get unlimited (All VM licenses are branched off the host one)

 

In your scenario use standard, SIMs on one, rest on other is going to be cheapest way.

That would definately make things cheaper as I could go for the Standard edition.

I just wondered if it was wise to have all those on one VM, especially DHCP.

That's a standard domain controller setup, no reason to ever split those roles really.

 

If it was a physical server you wouldn't buy two to have DHCP seperate surely?

As discussed by Steve, using the 'Standard' version of Windows Server will only allow you to run 2 VM's off the Main Host due to licensing. Datacenter will allow an 'Unlimited' number.

 

If you decide to go for Datacenter, it will allow you to expand and separate roles more. Normally you'd be okay running DHCP, DNS & ADDS from your main Domain Controller. I normally don't add anything more unless there is a need to.

 

There is no need to have a physical DC anymore, in my opinion.

The price for DataCentre is a lot more so having all on one single VM and then the other remaining one for our Sims Server will make things a lot cheaper too.

 

One thing Im confused about is if I need some CAL licenses?

You do, but no different for a VM so you "should" already have them licensed for the previous servers etc?

 

Apart from special bits/bobs most the normal stuff is all under the same desktop pack (office/windows/cals)

Only thing I nearly forgot I also needed was SQL Server for our Sims. Currently running 2014 but need to buy the newer one.

Then that should be it.

Also remember you can add more than one Server Standard license to a host. As they are now sold per-core, you have to buy a minimum of 16 cores even if your server has less, then every 16 cores after that gives you another 2 VMs. The cutoff point where Datacenter becomes better value is about 7 VMs.
