Some interesting keyboard/ hardware button combos for resetting the frozen drivers in this article: https://www.engadget.com/2018/05/03/microsoft-windows-10-chrome-cortana-freeze-fix/

“Until it can deploy a fix for the Chrome bug, Microsoft suggested those whose systems are locking up can try a workaround key sequence. If you have a keyboard, simultaneously pressing the Windows logo key, Ctrl, Shift and B might help, as that resets the graphics driver. Tablet users can try the pushing the volume up and down buttons together three times within 2 seconds. If you have a laptop, you might be able to unfreeze your system by closing and opening the lid.”

Thanks, will check this, though interestingly, when Chrome crashes, I have now also noticed that Edge doesn't work. Could this be some sort of DNS issue?

I am able to ping using CMD.

DNS flush has not helped

This has started happening to us. Only on certain users, mainly teaching staff. Chrome works for a couple of minutes then becomes unresponsive for about 30 seconds then is accessible for a few clicks then unresponsive. When this happens it usually takes out IE as well. Uninstalled Sophos, moved OUs changed users and rebuilt the affected machines. Usually this cures it for a while but then back into the same cycle. There seems to be no particular pattern to which machines are affected other than it being a member of staff. There are no obvious suspects in the Staff group policies as apposed to the student.
