Merging Tenancies (MAT) ... necessary for Microsoft Licensing

Hi all,

I am currently investigating merging all primaries within our soon-to-be-formed MAT on to a single Microsoft tenency (our existing one). I wondered if anyone who has gone through the process could answer a few questions:

  • First of all, is this necessary/preferable for managing microsoft licensing across the MAT (having a single EES agreement)? I am guessing it makes things simpler but wondered if it was absolutely necessary
  • What are the brief steps involved in the process if doing it ourselves? Backup all mailboxes to PST, register domain under our tenency, create mailboxes, restore PSTs??
  • For anyone using a third party provider / software, who were they and how did you find them? I think if we can get them moved for £300 per school it may be worth the outlay to negate the extra work / risk of data loss.
  • Can management for a single domain (creation of mailboxes etc.) be delagated? Guessing so but not 100% certain.
  • Has anyone migrated a sharepoint site? If so how was the process?

Thanks very much for any feedback people can provide.

We (not a school) did a merge about 18months ago. The process was as you described, but we had to wait quite a while (2-3 days) before before we could re-register the domain in the main tenancy. Things may have improved more recently.
