Youtube showing inappropriate next video

A teacher was watching a YouTube video about the life cycle of caterpillars and while the video was paused adverts appeared for x rated videos. Youtube is blocked for students but unblocked for staff but I would never have expected videos like that.

 

I don't want to go down the road of white listing every video staff need so is there a Youtube setting I need to be looking at? We use Sophos for filtering but don't recall seeing anything in there.

Was the teacher signed in to youtube/google? I'm wondering if their, ahem, previous viewing history is why these were suggested next videos.

I don't think that would work as the videos were still within YouTube.

I did think the same so looked and no they were not signed in

If you go to the account for that Youtube channel, I think you will find it may be because the videos in question are content from that channel.

EDIT: They appear to be embedded within the video - so rather than 'suggested (suggestive?) videos, they are actually adverts for other videos from the content provider. I believe you can do this in videos when you create them.

Those are the next videos suggested by the channel themselves, I think turning the annotations etc. off should stop this from showing.

Just a bit of further info...

 

I don't think turning off annotations will work (didn't for me). I believe Youtube were stopping (or have stopped) allowing annotations to be added since it didn't work very well in the first place especially for mobile devices (which make make up the significant majority of views). These are actually 'end screens' or 'cards' used by the channel themselves to promote other videos.

 

Sorry I can't be much help in avoiding them, just a teacher management lesson I guess. As in research your materials first and not pick random Youtube videos on the (butter)fly....

But it looks like it can't now, short of a tampermonkey script or possibly manhandling adblock into doing it?

Adblock does it by default hence the suggestion.

Strange....

 

I have adblock on Chrome and adblock plus on Firefox.... both show the offending articles...

 

However, my IE (which I believe the OP is using) which doesn't have any extra ad blocking actually doesn't show them!

Was about to post similar findings with my vanilla Firefox, however starting to wonder if our filteirng may have more to do with them not showing.

If you are using Google accounts you could whitelist/blacklist certain videos, but that would mean you need to be given the URL's of the videos, and that becomes a management overhead that may become problematic if you don't have the resources! I would say this is less of a technical issue and more of a 'be more careful' issue. Teachers should be vetting videos before showing them in the classroom. I know teachers are busy but, speaking from experience, so are school IT support staff.

Basically if you enable Schools Mode it doesn't suggest new videos, I think
