Office 365 & OneDrive

Hi Guys,

 

Just posting to ask how others deploy and manage Office 365 and in particular OneDrive so any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

 

A while back i setup ADConnect for SSO which currently only really works when they sign into the 365 web portal on my Windows 7 machines so as part of my Windows 10 migration project due to go live this Summer I am planning on moving from Office 2016 to Office 365. I have already setup and packaged Office 365 with Device Based Activation and slipped it into my SCCM task sequence. When a user logs in and opens up an Office application such as Word they are automatically logged in and and the whole saving to and sharing with OneDrive\Sharepoint works and is an amazing experience. However what I am currently struggling with is OneDrive and I have a few questions.

 

Has the Onedrive client built into Windows 10 1709 and that I can download via my Office 365 OneDrive Admin portal superseded OneDrive for Business which is included in the Office 365 package and should be I using it rather than Business?

 

How are you guys dealing with multi user computers such as Student machines and the whole running the Onedrive setup and configuring on each user login and it taking ages to populate Explorer?

 

How are you managing profile sizes on the machines? My obvious concern is that say i put a limit of 2-5GB rather than the 1TB limit for each user but then they sync all their data to their profile on the computer i could end up swamping my 256SSD's if a machine accumulates a number of student profiles over a period of time.

 

How do you deal with the cacheing of the data on the user profile (C:\Users\%username%\OneDrive) as although the majority of my users do not have access to the C drive I do have some and they can quite easily browse to C:\Users and then browse any data which has been sync'd or opened on that machine in each profiles OneDrive folder. Is there a way to to force it so that everything is cloud only or change the Onedrive location to their home area? I tried setting the "Set default location for OneDrive folder" to H:\ which is what is mapped as each persons home area but it didn't really work.

This is the problem with the OneDrive client; caching on the local volume in an Enterprise environment (for many users) doesn't work, but I've been lead to believe the latest OneDrive client doesn't cache anything locally (from what I've read)?

You can enable files on demand via GPO and also limit the amount of bandwidth the onedrive client is allowed to use if you decide to store onedrive data locally.

When you say latest version do you mean 18.065.0329.0002 which is only available on the Insiders Ring? I have 18.44.0301.0006 which is the latest Production Ring client which uses the files on demand so although it doesn't do a big ass sync of everything it does put the files on the machine if they either open the file which downloads it to C:\ or if they right click and select to sync it.
