Adding CCTV to Vlan'd network

Hi,

 

I've got a couple ideas but wanted to get some input on how exactly is the best way to do this. Currently our CCTV is on a completely separate physical network to the main network. Recently, we have gone from a flat network to a VLAN'd network and are thinking about adding the CCTV network to this in order to be able to run any additional cameras back to the nearest network cab rather than physical cables back to the Server Room. The NVR is currently connected to the main network through its secondary NIC so we're able to watch footage over the network. We use Procurve switching throughout.

 

Can anyone recommend the best practice for this?

Personally I would add a CCTV VLAN and run it that way, saves running separate switching, wires etc.

We worked out how much bandwidth the CCTV was going to use up, and looked at the current utilisation to see there was LOADS of spare so just created a new vlan across all switches and ran CCTV over that. Our old CCTV had a physically separate network on the roof with a box every 100m containing power adapters and a mini switch, it's been so much more reliable (and easier to look after) since we brought it inside and onto the main network infrastructure.

We are right in the midst of fitting CCTV to our network. We implemented VLAN's over the Christmas holidays and so it was an ideal time to do it. Just create a CCTV VLAN on your switches and run it over that. We have a PoE switch in each cabinet already for running our WiFi so it's been easy so far (touch wood)
