BETjlindsay Posted March 23, 2018 Posted March 23, 2018 hello all, we have around 80 ipads that are booked out by teachers for lessons. they will usually send students to collect them from us, but there are problems with the current method. sometimes they haven't prebooked any sometimes they've haven't booked the right amount. it means someone from IT has to stay present in the office i've suggested making the staff collect the ipads them selves (that just won't work apparently) can anyone suggest ways that they manage shared ipads that might work better for us? Thanks Jack
caffrey Posted March 23, 2018 Posted March 23, 2018 Hi, You've also missed out :- Returned iPads haven't been signed out of wifi \ or any apps which adds to more admin time iPads not being returned, which leads to fun and games at hometime (Usually left laying around) so we play hunt the iPad with wifi and locate your device. iPads accidentally going home Constant interruptions on the IT department when students \ teachers want to borrow \ return or have printing issues \ wifi issues \ app issues \ certificate issues Charging - keeping enough power in the device is fun too especially if they are booked out all the time I'm also concerned about weight, giving a student 10 iPads and expecting them not to drop them is a gamble We've ran class sets for close to 5 years and it doesn't really work, sorry for the bad news
FishCustard Posted March 23, 2018 Posted March 23, 2018 Isn't it a 1:1 device? Apple would certainly like it to be that way, but most schools have nowhere near the funding required for something like that.
BETjlindsay Posted March 23, 2018 Author Posted March 23, 2018 I'm also concerned about weight, giving a student 10 iPads and expecting them not to drop them is a gamble We've ran class sets for close to 5 years and it doesn't really work, sorry for the bad news yes, they do struggle. so at the moment, we have canvas bags which have 5 in. They often come back with 4 or 6, but as we don't have time to keep checking the bags as and come in or go out, that then has knock on effects for everyone. the only solution i can see that will work is (BURNING THEM ALL) barcoding them all and when students come to retrieve the ipads, they scan and bag the ipads them selves some of my schools are nearly at 2000 students. some have ipad schemes which is fine, but the ones where the school has purchased the ipads outright will definitely struggle to replace them in the next few years
caffrey Posted March 23, 2018 Posted March 23, 2018 If it's any consolation ours have lasted 5 years with varying amounts of abuse - they are still going but cannot be upgraded to ios 11
BETjlindsay Posted March 23, 2018 Author Posted March 23, 2018 yeah we have around half that wont take ios 11 - what's wrong with pen and paper! much more versatile digressed slightly - so knowone has an ingenius way of booking out shared ipads for classes?
Rob_D Posted March 23, 2018 Posted March 23, 2018 We ended up barcoding our ipad set and adding them into the Library loan system. That way they're seen as a Library resource so the Librarians have a sense of ownership and do all the management stuff. Saw these at BETT, looks really good if you can afford it. I can dream right? https://www.lapsafe.com/products/diplomat/self-service
