Postfix, MailScanner, Spamassassin, ClamAV and Cyrus IMAP forms a powerful suite.

 

We have built it like this for around 35,000 users on one system and have a system running in a Northants school based on this.

 

We ourselves use Zimbra and can recommend it highly

Also worth considering Qmail with MailScanner, Spamassassin, ClamAV etc..

 

Chack out A qmail installation guide so advanced it takes 2 years to update - It's gotta be Qmailrocks.org for more info

All depends on what you're looking for.

 

You've effectively got at least 5 aspects to a mail server:

 

1. MTA - handles receiving mail and sending out back out again. Examples are postfix, sendmail, exim, qmail, in no particular order of preference.

 

2. IMAP/POP server - so that your users can actually read their mail in their client of choice. Some free IMAP servers: UW imap, dovecot, Cyrus IMAP. Pop3? there are loads out there - qpopper used to be quite popular, not sure what state it's in now.

 

3. Spam checking - Spam Assassin works very well in this regard, especially in conjunction with MailScanner.

 

4. Virus checking... again, MailScanner does a great job here, using clamav or others

 

5. Web interface - the horde/IMP project, roundcubemail, squirrel mail, etc, etc. There are loads out there.

 

Choose your MTA first - these are usually the most complex to configure. postfix is reasonably straightforward to setup, IMHO. Once you've got your MTA up and running and delivering mail, head over to mailscanner.info and get that setup with spamassassin and clamav.

 

After that, everything else is pretty simple.

 

I used to run 30,000+ users on UW imap, and have supported customers doing much more than that on both UW imap and Cyrus.

 

MailScanner copes easily with anything thrown at it - Julian Field, who wrote it, knocked it up to go on Southampton Uni's mail servers - these boxes handle over a million messages per week (at least they were when I left there several years ago!)

 

Then it's a case of choose your web interface - download a few, and try them out. Roundcubemail looks very pretty and AJAX-ified. The Horde project is pretty stable, I've used it for 8 years or so, never had a minute's bother with it.
