tech-man Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 Hello, I’m sure this has been discussed many times before, but... I wanna deploy SCCM in our organisation.... What version should I deploy etc? Does anyone have any good resources to help do this etc? How many server VMs do I need to run it? Any tips etc? Thanks in advance.
Steve21 Posted March 9, 2018 Posted March 9, 2018 You have to use current branch (1710 atm) if you want Windows 10 full support etc There's full guides on the main install etc on a few sites that's not hard it's the setup and configure after that takes a long time but a lot of it is just time consuming not difficult if you only want the basics e.g. Software and OSD One VM is fine unless you have lots and lots of computers/physical sites Only main tip really would be back it up often while playing Lots of minor changes in sccm can have huge consequences if you do something silly and not always easy to roll back quickly but mainly just setup s test group and play to your hearts content, as long as you deploy things to the test group and not all computers not much dan go wrong! Steve21 Posted March 9, 2018 Posted March 9, 2018 Basically 2012 is the old one. The latest one is CB (current branch) and is named near enough in line with Win10 as they're released. So currently one is 1710 (And 2nd update rollup for it was released this week). But once you install CB you can upgrade it all from inside it, so no standalone installers needed after first one And it depends on what you're using it for really, we have it pumped with a lot of resources as using fair enough of it, but its' very SQL driven so shouldn't be stingy on resources Steve

SCCM versions don’t work like that anymore. It now follows the windows 10 release pattern. So rather than there being SCCM 2007/2012 R1/R2 SP 1/2 etc there is now just SCCM current branch. Releases are now, broadly, in line with windows 10 releases so that SCCM can support deploying the latest version of win 10. SCCM is currently at v1710. You need to install the latest base version and upgrade to the latest build. Here’s a list of build numbers and changes: https://buildnumbers.wordpress.com/sccm/

Once it's installed, you'll probably notice that there are some updates available, which will bring it up to version 1710, with the latest hotfix rollup iif KB4086143). Like others have said, one VM is fine, though I'd recommend being a bit generous with the RAM, as it can be quite heavy. Ours is currently assigned 36GB, which may well be overkill. We have our Software Assurance set to expire on the same date as our OVS-ES agreement. According to this page, a valid SCCM or equivilant Software Assurance license will allow you to use the CB for SCCM. I am currently running SCCM 1706, which is the latest CB.

The way it was explained to me by resellers is that you don't need to licence the actual *server software* but need to licence the servers and clients that you want to manage. We just want to manage non-server clients as the server licences are expensive so just have this licence on our OVS-ES (the qty being our FTE count): PROVANTAGE: Microsoft J5A-01181 Ove System Center Config Manager CLTML Al L/SA 1Y These are the client management licences (with SA) so we can install SCCM CB, keep it up to date and manage non-server OS. Steve That aimed at me? If so, we don't have the desktop pack, when we went through it with our reseller it worked out better for us just to pick what we wanted.
